Production News & Events Summer Edition

June 25, 2024

Production News & Events Summer Edition
Here in the North State, our spring was definitely filled with great activities! We had the privilege of hosting 11 industry professionals on this year's FAM tour and partnered with Film Siskiyou for the first time to showcase the neighboring counties. Highlights from the tour included Wild Horse Sanctuary, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding Civic Auditorium, Redding Fire House #1, Shasta State Historic Park, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, The Restoration House, Redding, CA, Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge, Shasta Dam Overlook, Lake Shasta Caverns, Lake Siskiyou Campground, Hedge Creek Falls, Dunsmuir CA, City of Dunsmuir, Railroad Park Resort. We're grateful for everyone who made our guests feel cared for throughout their stay in our region and were honored to spend time with everyone who participated and looki forward to welcoming them back soon!

I also had the honor as FLICS President to attend the 2024 Marché du Film - Festival de Cannes in partnership with Film USA. During the event, we hosted many networking events and I participated in the panel "Explore America's Film Frontier with the USA Film Commissioners." It was a great opportunity to connect with filmmakers at one of the world's most prestigious film festivals!

Locally, we attended screenings of Miracle Mile which filmed almost entirely in Shasta County (read more below for Redding premier event) and The Golden Ghosts which filmed in Shasta, Tehama, and Siskiyou Counties,

We are excited to share more information about these updates, as well as some local crew and location requests, award updates, our upcoming 10 year anniversary celebration, and more in this newsletter.

It is such a blessing to be able to serve this community!
In gratitude,
Sabrina Jurisich, Regional Film Commissioner
Representing Shasta, Tehama, Yuba & Sutter Counties

Local Spotlight
Shon Harris, Mayor and Filmmaker

Shon Harris was the Captain and Commander of the Yuba Sutter California Highway Patrol area office. He retired from that and ran for public office and is currently Mayor of Yuba City. He began in filmmaking a few years ago making commercials, short films and PSA's. For Shon, film is an opportunity to be creative, expressive and entertaining. He finds the whole processing very interesting and says he learns something new on every project.

He enjoys the overlap between his Mayor duties and working in film with the platform to provide messaging to the community. Often he is inspired to create content from his daily conversations and duties at work. He finds himself envisioning scenes and shots and often writes them down during the day.

Shon loves that filmmaking provides unique opportunities to help the community while having something that pulls on and also fuels his creativity. He's also been able to work on several projects with his daughter in this process which gives them more time together and is a plus for him.

Shon hopes that over time the film industry in Yuba Sutter increases, he says, "Yuba Sutter is a living, breathing movie set. Everywhere I turn I see opportunities for creative shots". Shon thinks that the region is appealing to filmmakers because of the geographic diversity and adds, "filmmakers can secure almost any backdrop in just a couple hours in any direction."

The project he is currently working on is a feature that was funded by the Upstate California Creative Corps. The intent of the grant is to help enhance the lives of, and create opportunities for people who are living in poverty through various forms of art. Shon is hoping to continue his work in feature length films and is enjoying building his local team.

Shon says that the film commission is "a one-stop resource for locations, the permitting process, and securing local cast & crew" and "It lends credibility, notoriety, professionalism, and speaks one voice for us." The film commission saves time for filmmakers and that alone is an attraction for them and it also brings economic assistance to the area when there are productions filming. "Having things filmed here is free promotion, essentially, as people will come to see key filming locations of their favorite films."

Some advice he gives to people starting out in film is to decide on what it is you want to create, then try your best not to compromise your goals or your thoughts. However, be prepared that external influences might provide opportunties. Shon learned that as soon as people join your project they bring their own ideas and sometimes those will be even better than what you had in mind, so be open. He also encourages emerging filmmakers to "find your Yoda." In other words, a mentor who can teach you and guide you about the nuances of filmmaking that you can't learn on YouTube or read in a book.

Local Location Inspiration:
Frenchtown Inn, Cedar Crest Winery, and Wild Horse Sanctuary!

Frenchtown Inn - Yuba Sutter

Frenchtown Inn: Situated in the foothills of Yuba county, Frenchtown inn is a unique and stunning property, right next to a 7 acre pond. The architecture and interiors of each of the houses is very mediterranean, with arches and tiled floors. There's lots of spaces with outdoor seating and even a dance floor space with strung lights hanging over it. This could be depicted as Europe or America, 40 years ago, or current day! A breathtaking location. For more photos: Frenchtown Inn - Film Yuba-Sutter

Cedar Crest Winery - Tehama

Hidden away, under tall and elegant cedar trees is 'Cedar Crest Winery', a lovely vineyard that serves it's locally made wine. This light and relaxed space embraces it's setting with a tractor static to the side of the cabin, a barrel water feature and 'home-like', inviting interiors. This log cabin like winery stands out as it has an exclusive atmosphere that would be considered family friendly rather than a sophisticated or pensive atmosphere that may be found in other wineries. For more photos:Cedar Crest Winery | Film Tehama

Wild Horse Sanctuary - Shasta

This open, free and rustic space offers an idyllic backdrop for wild horses to roam and run. Any project that requires a small-town, barn location should take a further look. Modest and sweet, Shasta's 'Wild Horse Sanctuary' has fields with white blossoms and many vibrant trees. The property also offers a few dark wood cabins that overlook the sanctuary's personal pond, effortlessly meshing with it's surroundings and the old Californian essence we see in the Northern CA region.
