Carlos R. Diazmuñoz AMC chooses ZEISS Supreme Primes for Short "The Men's Room"

December 4, 2024

Carlos R. Diazmuñoz
Directed by and starring Tina Alexis Allen (Outsiders, Looking for Kathleen actress) the men's room tackles the sometimes overlooked male victims of Hollywood's predatory side. When Crystal Gold (played by Allen) a has-been film star desperate for a comeback receives an offer for a career-changing role, she and her son come face to face with an ugly truth.

"It was a fabulous script, the location was amazing - the Wilshire Ebell theater - and it was perfect for shooting with the Supreme Primes." - Carlos R. Diazmuñoz, AMC

Dynamic 'backstage' gimbal Inspired by Birdman

"I was completely enamored when Birdman came out and the way that it captures that behind the scenes feel and its subversive 'the truth isn't quite the truth' and 'we're kind of acting but then we're not'," explains Allen.

While the film would not be one-shot, it sought to create a similar kinetic sense of motion and activity in the backstage halls of the Wilshire Ebell.

"We decided to use a Freefly Movi Pro with RED Komodo with ZEISS Supreme Primes to simulate that fluidity. One of my favorite shots is when Tina's character is looking for her son backstage. It was practically a 360-shot. I had to watch my own footing to keep from tripping." - Diazmuñoz

"The Zeiss speed was very important at 1.5-

...The lighting was very challenging-To keep it real, the light levels were sometimes very low. The fast, T1.5 Supreme Prime lens was one of the biggest assets on set."

Catching the Emotional Turn

"The most important emotional transition in the movie happens in an extreme closeup shot in slow motion. Having the right lens for that was everything. Zeiss Supremes are very sharp lenses but not digitally sharp. I paired the 85mm with 1/4 Glimmerglass for the emotional sequence."
