The motion for Shadowbox Studios was passed on Tuesday night to build a filming studio in Newhall during the Planning Commission meeting.

On Tuesday night during the Planning Commission meeting, the committee passed the motion to grant Shadowbox a 1.3 million-square-foot film and television studio campus.

"When we first met in April, we presented to the commission why we think that the City of Santa Clarita is a great fit for our project and why our project is a great fit for Santa Clarita," said Jeff Weber, representing Shadowbox Studios.

Weber talked about the changes the planning commission had asked Shadowbox to make, such as the building height, Emergency Operation Plan (EOP), street improvement plan, project operation, a report on the impact on heritage oak trees and project renderings.

While the motion was passed, certain conditions were required, such as adding a gate for emergency purposes, and working with emergency personnel for a shelter-in-place plan for nearby Placerita residents and animals.

During a previous meeting, the Planning Commission had requested that Shadowbox reduce its floor area by 24 percent in order to reduce the impact on oak trees surrounding the project area.

The building would estimate the same height and the outdoor perimeter would remain the same potentially increasing local employment by 10 to 15 percent.

The plot at Railroad Avenue and 13th Street falls between the Mixed-Use Neighborhood (MXM) zone and the Placerita Canyon Special Standards (PCSSD).

The plans are now expected to be voted on by the Santa Clarita City Council at an upcoming meeting.
