TECHNOLOGY ALERT: JUST HOW CLEAN IS IT
BLUE MOON USES 3M HYGIENE MONITORING YOUR SURFACES ARE QUANTIFIABLY CLEAN

Now, more than ever, Facility Managers are paying close attention to the quality and effectiveness of routine cleaning and janitorial tasks.

The Covid-19 pandemic has reminded everyone that when humans touch things, like tables, doorknobs, railings, switches, handles, or buttons, they transfer biological matter that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Surfaces that look clean may, instead, contain billions of unnoticed harmful germs and pathogens.

Since launching the 3M Hygiene Monitoring Program in January 2022, Blue Moon clients have praised having the power to know and quantify just how clean surfaces are.

For facilities with large numbers of employees and visitors it means a lot of touched surfaces. Having cleanliness metrics at your fingertips is an invaluable tool in the effort to reduce employee sick days and increase company productivity.

The program measures potential risk of exposure to high levels of organic residues, including microorganisms found in bodily fluids. Hygiene monitoring has been used in the food business for years, but has recently gained popularity in other non-food industries.

Q&A
Will 3M hygiene monitoring detect covid-19 (coronavirus) on surfaces?
No. The 3M program only detects adenosine triphosphate (or ATP) which is a molecule found in all living cells. Viruses, like coronavirus, are particles that contain RNA or DNA, but not ATP, and cannot be detected under this program. With that said, cross-contamination from ATP in the workplace has always accounted for a very large component of employee sick days.

What surfaces do you recommend for hygiene testing and monitoring?
We generally swab high touch points (HTPs) like switches, buttons, handles, levers, railings, and other commonlytouched elements.
